Find Hampshire Traffic Court Records

Start with the Magistrate Court clerk in Hampshire County if you need a traffic court record, since most traffic tickets land there. Town ordinance citations are the exception. Those go to a municipal court instead. A Hampshire County traffic court records search begins with two details: which court issued the ticket, and the exact citation or case number printed on it. The docket can then show the charge, court dates, your plea, and any payments made. Keep in mind it is not the same thing as your state driving record. Online tools can help you spot a case or find where to pay, but the clerk is still the place for documents, certified copies, and a current hearing date. Call the clerk too if a new citation has not shown up yet.

Traffic Court Records in Hampshire County

State traffic citations, DUI and other misdemeanors, and preliminary proceedings land in Hampshire County Magistrate Court. Its files sit with the Magistrate Clerk at the Judicial Center in Romney. MCR gives the public an index. The clerk hands out actual documents and confirms what stands today.

Town ordinance cases take another path. Romney and Capon Bridge list town-government contacts. Neither town posts a standalone public municipal docket portal. If your paper carries a Magistrate case ID, it belongs in MCR. A Romney ordinance notice goes to the municipal court contact. A Capon Bridge code matter starts with town hall or code enforcement.

Hampshire Traffic Search Identifiers

Three different numbers show up in the state payment workflow. None of them swap for another. The citation ID comes straight off the ticket. The Case ID tags the court case once it has been entered. A Payment Plan ID exists only if a plan was set up. Copy each value in full, dashes included, because the payment portal demands an exact match.

A broad name search is a fallback, nothing more. Always compare the case ID, the filing date, the case type, and the court location before trusting a match.

How to Look Up a Traffic Ticket

Begin with the court named on your citation. MCR accepts a citation number up to 30 characters and a Case ID up to 15 characters, plus party names, a filing-date range, the Citation case type, and a Hampshire court-location filter. For a payable target, the Magistrate Court Payment System is a second route in.

  1. Read the ticket and identify whether it names Magistrate Court or a town court.
  2. Enter the exact citation number in MCR and select Hampshire.
  3. If needed, search by last name, filing dates, case type, and party role.
  4. Check the payment system by Citation ID, Case ID, or Payment Plan ID.
  5. Call the Magistrate Clerk at 304-822-4311 or visit Suite 3 if the record has not posted.
  6. For a town citation, contact the municipal clerk shown on the notice.

In person, the Magistrate public terminal is the fallback. MCR caps results at 30 and hands over no documents, so ask the clerk for the citation, any order, or the disposition.

Hampshire Exact-Match Payment Search

The state's Magistrate Court Payment System page presents fields for Citation ID Number, Citation County, Case ID Number, and Payment Plan ID Number, along with a reCAPTCHA check. Pick Hampshire when the county option applies. Keep every dash intact.

West Virginia Magistrate Court citation and case payment search fields

That official page treats citation, case, and plan searches as separate routes. A payment result proves only that money moved, not that the court closed the case. Keep the receipt, then check the docket for the applied payment and the disposition.

Finding Your Traffic Court Date

Your citation usually prints the answer or appearance date. Rule 7 spells out how guilty, no-contest, and not-guilty responses work, including which matters you can handle by phone or mail and which demand a personal appearance. The citation date, plus any later court notice, controls.

Citation NumberEnter the exact printed value, including dashes, as a Citation ID.
CourtHampshire Magistrate Court or the named municipal court.
Date & TimeThe answer or appearance setting, subject to later notice.
CourtroomThe location stated on the citation, notice, or clerk's current record.
StatusPending event, plea, payment, disposition, or failure-to-appear activity.

MCR's filing-date filters ignore hearing dates. Open the case detail, read the Appearance Date and the entries after it, then confirm with the clerk before you drive anywhere. A continuance can leave the original ticket date stale.

Hampshire Traffic Record Fields

The MCR case-detail screen keeps case facts and charge facts apart. Write down both. One charge can carry its own plea and disposition while another case event is still pending.

Case ID
The court's identifier for the Magistrate matter.
Appearance Date
The date scheduled for an answer or appearance.
Agency
The agency tied to the citation entry.
Plea and date
The recorded response and when it was entered.
Disposition and date
The outcome recorded for the charge and the date of entry.

Other fields you may see cover case location, description or style, filing date, type, trial type, citation, statute, magistrate, and related cases. Copy the exact label. Don't translate it into your own conclusion.

Paying or Contesting a Ticket

Paying and contesting are two different choices before the court. Payment can ride along with a guilty or no-contest answer. That works where the rule and citation allow it. A not-guilty answer opens a court process. It also brings a trial notice under the Magistrate rules. Some matters require you to appear in person. The printed citation and the clerk's instructions control.

Missed answer or appearance: The court rule describes notice to the prosecutor and DMV and possible warrant action. The exact consequence depends on the charge, notice, and court action.

Verify the current case with the Hampshire Magistrate Clerk and any license action with West Virginia DMV.

Starting a payment, sending a message, or asking for a new date does not itself change the court docket. Confirm with the court that your response was accepted.

Hampshire Traffic Dismissal Form Route

The West Virginia Judiciary's Magistrate forms collection can be searched by topic, category, and language. It lists the Motion to Dismiss Traffic Citation as form SCA-M340NP. Spotting the form does not mean dismissal is available in any particular Hampshire County case. It does not mean dismissal was granted either.

The official forms search lays out the traffic form route the state provides.

Use that state form source to identify the right paper, then file it only through the channel the court requires. The clerk cannot pick the form for you or hand out legal advice.

Court Traffic Record vs Driver Record

These are two files kept by two different offices. The Magistrate Clerk holds the Hampshire court case; West Virginia DMV holds the driving record. Court entries may reach DMV later, but the two systems do not update in lockstep.

A clean payment screen says nothing about current DMV status. And a DMV update never substitutes for the certified court disposition. Go to the office that keeps each file for that file's facts.

Hampshire Traffic Cases by Numbers

Numbers from the 2025 West Virginia Judiciary Annual Report show why the Magistrate route matters. It matters in Hampshire County. The Magistrate criminal table lists 906 motor-vehicle misdemeanors and 70 DUI misdemeanors for the year. Juvenile matters sit in their own row: 10 motor-vehicle misdemeanors. Felony motor-vehicle cases add another 7. Keep the categories separate, though. The report never sums them into one Hampshire County traffic total, and neither should you.

70DUI misdemeanors

Annual administrative counts are not a live traffic court calendar. They still teach something practical. A broad result set is hard to resolve without exact identifiers, county filters, a free index, and a clerk fallback.

Hampshire State and Town Citations

Check the issuing authority before you search anything. Romney lists its municipal court contact through the town police department. Capon Bridge's official code-enforcement page warns that violations can land you in municipal court. Fines follow. Neither town posts a public docket, payment ledger, or calendar. A town ordinance case may never enter MCR at all. For that record, contact the town clerk directly. A state traffic citation tied to Hampshire Magistrate Court is different. It belongs in MCR and with the Magistrate Clerk. Location alone does not decide custody.

Fees and Copies

Searching MCR costs nothing, but it shows no document images. For a plain or certified traffic record, ask the Hampshire Magistrate Clerk and confirm the current amount. West Virginia Code ยง59-1-11 sets the rates: 50 cents per page for a transcript or other paper copy, and $1 for a certified copy of a court order.

A fine, a court cost, a copy charge, a service fee, and an online portal fee are all separate items. Save your receipt. Then ask how the payment was applied and whether any court action remains.
